1 in 10 Pregnant Women Have Insomnia

With a baby on the way, you’re off caffeine, physically exhausted from having a weight strapped to your belly 24/7, and eating healthier than ever. You should be sleeping, well, like a baby – right?

Nope, according to a Wiser Pregnancy survey. About 11% of women report that they experienced significant insomnia while pregnant. 

Whether the trouble is falling asleep or staying asleep through the night, pregnant women aren’t getting the shut-eye they need.

So what’s keeping moms-to-be up at night?  Hormones can play a part, as can anxiety and stress about all things baby-related.

Later in pregnancy, physical changes – full bladder, restless baby kicking, back pain, heartburn – can wake you up and keep you up.  And that’s not to mention sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome or sleep apnea that can show up during pregnancy.

Pregnant Women Healthier Than Other People

Having a baby is the ultimate motivator to adopt a healthy lifestyle. In fact, pregnant women are champs compared to the rest of the population.

Expecting moms have much lower rates of drug, alcohol and cigarette use, particularly in the second and third trimesters.  They exercise and sleep more.  They get regular check-ups that include discussions about weight, diet and nutrition. They eating a balanced diet and boost vitamin intake.

So how do pregnant women stack up health-wise against non-pregnant women in the U.S.?

Fatigue During Pregnancy More Common than Morning Sickness or Back Pain

What’s the most common ailment during pregnancy?  Fatigue takes the top spot. 

A recent WiserPregnancy survey finds that almost three-quarters of women experience fatigue—extreme tiredness or exhaustion—during pregnancy.  The next most common ailments were back pain (experienced by 68% of women) and morning sickness (faced by 58% of moms-to-be). 

Why does pregnancy sap your energy?  Physical changes are largely responsible.  Your hormone levels spike during the first few weeks of pregnancy as your body prepares itself to nourish a developing baby.  Progesterone in particular can cause sluggishness and sleepiness.
