Zzzzzz…

Yesterday I decided that I’d finally had enough of this 5+ weeks of no sleep. So, with calm resolute, I vowed to stay in bed all night, no matter how many times Lil’Tex woke up fussing for me. (As long as he didn’t get hysterical, that is… I’m not here to torture the poor kid, just try to break him of a bad routine.)

And wouldn’t you know it? The VERY day I decide to do what I should have done about 4 weeks ago, he slept just fine all on his own. He did wake up twice and fussed a little, but no screaming or hysteria or anything worth worrying about. Just “Eh! Eh! Zzzzz…”

Sleep is a Foreign Word

To me, the scariest subject in all of parenting is sleep. Or rather, lack thereof. Pulling an all-nighter in college does not even begin to compare; try doing that for months at a time.

Learning about “broken sleep” (i.e. sleeping two hours here, three hours there at night with multiple periods of waking in between) had me in a panic before we had our first son. I found, and still find, terrible sleep to be more frightening than childbirth. Maybe that’s because the latter has a beginning and an end… and painkillers.

Go Take a Nap

Hit the snooze button while you still have the chance. That is my advice to you. That is every mother’s advice to you. And trust me, it’s good advice.

When I was pregnant with Lil’Tex I did not listen to the warnings to “Get all the rest you can now before baby comes!” When mothers with bags under their eyes told me to enjoy my eight hours of sleep, I scoffed. When a friend told me about “broken sleep” I had nightmares… but still, I didn’t take advantage of my good fortune to sleep whenever, wherever and for however long I wanted.
